Two Chinese mega-cities lift curbs on buying homes

Two Chinese mega-cities, Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang Province and Xi'an in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, said on Thursday they would lift all home purchase restrictions to shore up the local real estate market and boost market confidence. It follows similar moves recently in other big cities like Chengdu, Shenzhen and Beijing.

5月9日，中国两座特大城市杭州和西安取消限购，以支撑当地房地产市场，提振市场信心。此前，成都、深圳和北京等大城市也采取了类似举措。

As of Thursday, a total of 35 Chinese cities have relaxed restrictions on home purchases, while 24 have completely scrapped all curbs on residential property purchases. In addition, more than 160 cities have adopted home-buying loosening policies.

截至9日，中国共有35个城市放松了限购，24个城市全面取消限购。此外，160余个城市出台了购房宽松政策。

Chinese authorities have been ramping up measures to prop up the real estate sector recently. The most recent meeting of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau on April 30 called for measures to support the property sector, saying that city-specific policies should be implemented, and that local governments, real estate enterprises and financial institutions must shoulder their share of responsibilities to ensure the delivery of housing projects and to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of homebuyers.

中国政府最近一直在加大力度提振房地产行业。中共中央政治局4月30日召开会议，呼吁采取措施支持房地产行业，继续坚持因城施策，压实地方政府、房地产企业、金融机构各方责任，切实做好保交房工作，保障购房人合法权益。

A top Baidu public relations executive has reportedly departed the Chinese technology company after she drew public outcry over her comments that were seen as glorifying a culture of overwork.

据报道，中国科技公司百度一名公关高管因其一系列被认为美化加班文化的言论引发广泛争议而离职。

Baidu’s head of communications Qu Jing had implied in a series of videos that she was not concerned about her employees as she was “not their mom” and said she only cared about results. She also said that the relationship between her and her subordinates was purely an “employer-employee relationship.”

百度公关负责人璩静在其发布的多条视频中透露，不愿意考虑员工，因为“我不是你的妈妈”，并表示只关心结果。她还称和员工只是雇佣关系。

The backlash was swift, with many on social media platforms like Weibo saying Qu lacked empathy.

Chinese online media outlet 36Kr first reported late Thursday that Qu had left her position at Baidu, citing unnamed sources. Internal systems showed Qu is no longer with the firm, according to a Baidu employee who asked not to be named as they were not authorized to provide that information to media.

The Work Safety Committee of China's State Council on Sunday announced that it will oversee the investigation into a university fire in central China's Henan Province.

5月5日，国务院安委会决定对河南省一所大学的火灾事故查处实行挂牌督办。

The fire occurred on Thursday at a grand auditorium in the Minglun campus of Henan University.

5月2日，河南大学明伦校区大礼堂发生火灾事故。

The committee will dispatch a team to supervise and guide the local investigation work. It urges efforts to carry out scientific and rigorous investigations to determine the cause of the fire, as well as to seek accountability in accordance with laws and regulations.

TikTok, an online video entertainment platform, and its Chinese parent company ByteDance on Tuesday filed a legal challenge against the U.S. government over a law forcing ByteDance to sell off the ultra-popular app or face a nationwide ban in the country.

在线视频娱乐平台TikTok及其中国母公司字节跳动7日提起法律诉讼，指控美国政府通过法案强迫字节跳动出售TikTok这款极受欢迎的应用程序，否则将在美国面临全国性禁令。

The law only gives ByteDance 270 days to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese buyer, with the possibility of a 90-day extension if the U.S. President determines it necessary.
