Biden drops out of presidential race

U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday night addressed the nation from the White House Oval Office to explain his decision to withdraw from the presidential race, with the election less than four months away.

美国总统拜登24日晚在白宫向全美发表电视讲话，解释在距离大选不足四个月时放弃竞选连任的原因。

Believing his "record as president" was deserving of a second term, Biden said in an 11-minute prime-time speech that "But nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition."

Biden's speech came three days after he announced on social media that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race. Concerns about his age and mental fitness surged following his disastrous debate performance on June 27, prompting over 30 Democratic lawmakers to publicly urge him to step aside.

Currently, Harris' approval ratings are not particularly high and she does not significantly outperform Biden in polls against Trump. According to the latest data compiled by Real Clear Politics, Trump leads Harris by an average of 1.7 percentage points in national polls.

Renmin University of China has fired a professor who sexually harassed a doctoral student, the university announced on Monday night after concluding an investigation into allegations made public over the weekend.

On Sunday, a video surfaced online showing a doctoral candidate in literature publicly accusing her mentor of sexual harassment and coercive molestation. The student, Wang Di, alleged that her mentor, Wang Guiyuan, demanded a sexual relationship. When she refused, he allegedly harassed her for the next two years and threatened to prevent her from graduating.

Star livestreamer Dong Yuhui has decided to resign from his position as a senior partner at East Buy, also known as Oriental Selection, a subsidiary of Chinese private tutoring giant New Oriental, the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Thursday. New Oriental Education & Technology Group shares slid 8 percent after Dong's resignation, according to yicai.com.
