China hails historic Olympic performance

China's top sports official on Tuesday hailed the country's athletes historic performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

8月20日，国家体育总局局长高志丹赞扬了中国运动员在2024年巴黎奥运会上的历史性表现。

China secured 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, marking the country's best ever performance at an overseas Olympic Games. Chinese athletes also set one world record and nine Olympic records.

中国在巴黎奥运会上共获得40枚金牌、27枚银牌、24枚铜牌，取得了境外参加奥运会的最佳战绩，并创造了1项世界纪录和9项奥运会纪录。

"The Chinese sports delegation achieved breakthroughs across multiple dimensions, including the number of gold medals, the variety of events in which gold was won, and the number of gold medalists, showcasing a further enhancement in the overall strength of our competitive sports," Gao Zhidan, head of the General Administration of Sport of China and president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), said at a review meeting held in Beijing.

国家体育总局局长、中国奥委会主席高志丹在北京举行的总结大会上表示：“中国体育代表团在金牌数量、夺金项目多样性、金牌获得者数量等多个维度上都实现了突破，体现出我国竞技体育整体实力的进一步提升。”

Gao noted that, while Chinese athletes continued to shine in traditionally strong sports, such as table tennis, diving, shooting, and weightlifting, major breakthroughs were also made in tennis, swimming and boxing. Additionally, Chinese athletes showcased great potential in emerging sports, such as climbing, skateboarding, surfing, and breaking.

高志丹指出，中国运动员在乒乓球、跳水、射击、举重等传统强项上继续大放异彩，在网球、游泳、拳击等项目上取得重大突破，在攀岩、滑板、冲浪、霹雳舞等新兴运动上也展现出巨大潜力。

Gao emphasized that Chinese athletes fully embodied the spirit of both Chinese sports and the Olympic movement at the Paris Games.

高志丹强调，中国体育健儿在巴黎奥运会上充分体现了中国体育精神和奥林匹克运动精神。

Officially launched across the globe on Tuesday, "Black Myth: Wukong" is a highly-anticipated video game inspired by the ancient Chinese tale "Journey to the West". This release marks a bold foray by Chinese game developers into a market long dominated by Western triple-A titles.

备受期待的电子游戏《黑色神话：悟空》于8月20日在全球正式上线，其灵感来源于中国古代经典故事《西游记》。该游戏的发行标志着中国游戏开发商在长期由西方主导的3A级游戏市场上迈出了的大胆一步。

According to data on Steam, "Black Myth: Wukong" has amassed over 1.04 million concurrent players by 11 a.m. this morning, merely an hour after the debut, topping the "most-played games" list of the platform.

As of Monday, "Black Myth: Wukong" received an average score of 82 out of 100 from 54 global media outlets, according to the global game rating website Metacritic. IGN China, a game review website, awarded the game a perfect score, hailing it as a milestone for the Chinese gaming industry and a domestically produced triple-A title that competes strongly on the global stage.

A blogger, who goes by Yourkris, posted two pictures of a sentimental moment when she parted with her boyfriend to her account on Xiaohongshu, a lifestyle social media platform in China. Much to her surprise, her post was soon overrun by Chinese users sending consoling comments in "Chinglish" -- a mix of Chinese and English that often results in humorous or awkward phrasing.

一位网名为Yourkris的博主在中国社交媒体平台小红书上发布了两张与男友分手时的伤感照片。令她意想不到的是，她的帖子很快就被中国用户“中式英语”(一种中英文混合的语言，经常会出现幽默或尴尬效果)发表的安慰性评论所淹没。

"Old no go, new no come" -- one user's attempt to express an ancient Chinese saying to advise her to leave the past behind and look forward.

"You swan, he frog" -- another user's bid to tell Yourkris that she deserves someone better.

Literal translations of Chinese idioms or expressions are not unknown to the English-speaking world. Take "Long time no see" as an example. The expression is a literal translation of a Chinese exclamation used by people who haven't seen one another for some time, and it has long been a widely used phrase in everyday English.

英语世界里，直译中文俗语或表达并不是什么新鲜事。比如“Long time no see”就是将汉语中人们许久未见时使用的感叹词直译而来，长期以来已成为日常英语中广泛使用的短语。

Despite its ubiquity, Chinglish used to be embarrassing for many Chinese people learning English -- so much so that even today, many Chinese learners still spend considerable time trying to master the most elusive details of English grammar to seem like native speakers.

尽管中式英语无处不在，但它曾经让许多中国人学习英语感到尴尬——以至于即使在今天，许多中国学习者仍会花费大量时间，试图掌握英语语法中那些最难懂的细节，好让自己看起来像母语人士。

But among younger generations of netizens growing up amid the growing global influence of Chinese culture, the idea of "language-shaming" seems to be fading. And as Chinglish phrases like "Add oil" are being included in the Oxford English Dictionary, it is understandable that speaking like a native no longer seems so important.

Returning to the Yourkris comment section, we can assume that many of these Chinese netizens speak English far better than their comments would suggest. However, instead of crafting grammatically impeccable sentences, it seems they chose to console the blogger with Chinese wisdom in its crudest, literally translated form: Chinglish.

回到Yourkris的评论区，我们可以假设，这些中国网友的英语水平实际上远比他们的评论所显示的水平高。然而，他们并没有选择去写一句语法上无懈可击的句子，而是运用了最朴素的中文智慧来安慰这位博主。

To them, Chinglish is more of an amusement than an embarrassment and, judging by the ongoing popularity of their comments, it has the potential to become a new viral meme.

French film star Alain Delon has died at the age of 88 at home in France, French media reported on Sunday.

据法国媒体18日报道，法国影星阿兰·德龙在家中去世，享年88岁。

Delon "passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family," said a statement issued by Delon's children.

德龙的子女在声明中表示，阿兰·德龙18日在位于法国小镇杜希的住所“安详离世”，其三个子女和家人都在身边。”

Born in 1935, Delon had been in poor health since suffering a stroke in 2019. Best known in China for his performance in the film "Zorro," he has won a César for Best Actor, an Honorary Golden Bear in Berlin, and an Honorary Palme d'Or in Cannes.
